Great Women Artists

I want to make you aware of this incredible book just recently released titled Great Women Artists.  While some may see this gorgeous and epic tome as a mere coffee table book, I would argue that it is so much more and so, so necessary at this time.

From the not-so-subtle design of its cover to the inclusion of 400+ artists, this book is a revelation.  Not only is it exceptionally well-made, including full-color images representing the work of each artist (which is totally to be expected from a publisher like Phaidon), but the scholarly work is just as profound.  Insightful, informative and in context, the reader learns about artists both established and emerging.  The introduction itself is a brief, but moving and powerful look at how women artists have been cyclically both celebrated and erased from history throughout the centuries and discusses how to proceed in the 21st century.

While it is a survey (each artists typically gets only one page), it is still a worthwhile read and an absolute must have for anyone who claims to appreciate art.

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
